Receipt and Journal Printers: Head Care and Paper-Path Truths
Printer faults generate a disproportionate share of service calls because three completely different problems share one symptom: no print.
First triage — is it a sensor?
- Media-remaining and cover-closed sensors throw “printer error” states even when the print engine is healthy.
- Reseat the roll, confirm the guide flanges clip fully, and cycle the door before any deeper work.
Thermal head care
Adhesive residue from low-dust paper builds an invisible insulating film that burns print segments. Clean the head with an approved pen or isopropyl on a soft swab at every reload, and never scrape with metal.
Paper-path lint
- Cut-paper dust collects on platen rubber, which then slips — visible as skewed, wavy output at the same feed.
- Wipe the platen and blow the path; expect improvement immediately.
Journal side
Journal rolls expire slowly and jam loudly. Keep journal stock on a first-in-first-out shelf; old adhesive-backed rolls curl on humid days.
Replace heads and platen rubber as maintenance items, not emergencies — the parts are cheap against an outage window. Humidity is the hidden printer-killer; the cabinet environment guide explains why paper behaves badly before the engine does, the the preventive calendar sets the reload-time checks, the full RMG Knowledge Base collection covers the rest.
